CONVEYOR CLEANING Widdop de Courcy - conveyor cleaning brushes

Of the various types of conveyor cleaning solutions available, the two most common are the strip brush, and roller brush. Of these there are various forms depending on applications and financial constraints. We hope that you will find this information helpful in deciding which system is best suited to your application.

Roller type conveyor cleaner brush The main advantages of a roller type cleaner brush are that they tend to be more Effective, have a Longer life, and can be used in most applications.

Both types of brush can be filled with a wide range of material, dependant upon the conditions, i.e.: hot, cold wet or dry. The brush rollers are manufactured in lengths of upto 5 metres.

Brush roller design is subject to customer requirements and applications. It is usually driven by factors such as replacement down time; replacement cost and wear characteristics. Below are the three main types of roller brush, depending on what the application demands.

PADDLE BRUSH

This is designed to give a ‘beating’ action, the high cost of the hub is offset by low cost of re-fills, these may be fitted in situe very quickly, with out having to strip the machine down or returning the roller to the manufacturer.

Paddle brush

FULL FACE BRUSH

This design covers most applications, and is the most common ‘cleaning brush’ used, comprising of a low cost hub, which is either a solid shaft or tube dependant upon the application this is then machine wrapped with srip brush and trimmed to the correct diameter.

Paddle brush

SPIRAL BRUSH

These are used when large amounts of debris are present and an ‘auger action’ is required. It can be supplied with both left and right-hand coil to eject material from both sides simultaneously and maintain belt alignment.

Paddle brush
BACKING STRIP AND FILAMENT Widdop de Courcy - conveyor cleaning brushes

The backing strip can be supplied in either galvanized steel or stainless steel, again depending on the application. The size of the strip depends on the filament diameter. The backing strips that are available are, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm and 11mm wide, With filament size ranging from 0.1mm (5mm strip) upto 3mm (11mm strip) .

Roller brush The roller brush can even be trimmed to suit the profile of the conveyor belt. This picture shows how the top and bottom brushes of a unit were shaped to clean both surfaces of o profiled belt.

A typical ‘standard’ brush unit, has a separate power supply of fixed speed, but a variable speed unit can be supplied. This speed control can take into account the wear on the overall brush diameter, surface speed or different weather conditions (wet or dry).

Conveyor brushes for quarry waste

Quarry handling brushes It is possible to drive the brush direct from the existing conveyor, in order to keep cost/weight/space to a minimum, however this is dependant on the conveyor system and position. It also ensures constant drive speed in relation to the belt. An alterativly, the drive motor can be manufactured as an integral part of the brush roller , making the whole unit extremely compact.

THE WET SYSTEM

This system cleans the conveyor belt using brushes and a cleaning medium, usally hot water, the system has a roller brush in contact with the belt at all times, this roller is then cleaned by the lower brush which is semi-imersed in the cleaning fluid, at the same time, the belt is then dried using a squegie roller, an air knife can also be added for complete dryness. This is only suitable for certain belts and applications.
