From 1 July 2026, despite petitions, the UK Government introduced new measures reducing tariff-free steel import quotas by 51% compared with the previous safeguard arrangements. Following industry consultation, this was revised from the initially proposed 60% reduction. The final tariff-free quota is 3.2 million tonnes, with a 50% tariff applying to affected imports once the relevant quotas are exhausted.
Bentham & Holroyd supports the importance of a strong domestic steel industry. However, many of our products require specialist stainless-steel grades that must meet exacting material specifications, quality standards and certification requirements. In these instances, suitable UK-produced alternatives are not currently available, making imported material a technical necessity rather than simply a commercial preference.
Although transitional arrangements and certain quota flexibilities have been introduced, the measures may still increase material prices, restrict availability and extend lead times. Despite the reduction from the proposed 60% quota cut to 51%, these additional costs could ultimately affect quotations and prices for our customers.
We will continue working closely with our suppliers to minimise disruption and secure the correct materials at the most competitive prices available. Most importantly, Bentham & Holroyd will not compromise on material quality, traceability or compliance with our customers’ specifications.
