The Other Half: Moses Holroyd – A Legacy Since 1922
While the Bentham name dates back to 1830, the other half of the company’s history—Holroyd—is often overlooked.
Moses Holroyd Limited, a pioneering wool combing manufacturer in its own right and a rival to Benthams, was founded in 1922 at 433 Manchester Road, Bradford.
The company started with a modest capital of £4,000 on November 7, 1922, and was officially registered under Companies Act No. 162840 on November 11, 1922. Its founding shareholders were Caroline Holroyd, residing at 551 Manchester Road, Bradford, and Alfred Cragg of 830 Manchester Road.
A key moment in the company’s evolution came in July 1963, when a special resolution led by Messrs. D. Holroyd and N. Holroyd saw Moses Holroyd Limited sale to F.H. Bentham at Prospect Works.
Later, on January 12 1967, the company was officially renamed to Bentham & Holroyd Ltd, the name we recognize today.
Thus, while the legacy of Moses Holroyd Limited may not be as widely known, its contribution to the wool combing industry and its lasting influence on the current company is undeniable
